Goodwill Industries of Ashtabula, Inc.

What does Goodwill do?

Goodwill’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and other special needs through education, job training and the power of work.  We accept donations from the public which are processed and sold in retail stores which support programming and mission-driven services.

How does Goodwill change lives?

Goodwill helps people expand their occupational capabilities, remove barriers to employment, and develop their potential to its fullest.

How can I support Goodwill?

Donate gently used clothing, furniture and other household goods to Goodwill; volunteer to provide support for mission-related services; hire a Goodwill program graduate at your place of business; use Goodwill for contract work such as janitorial, lawn care, piece work, direct mail assembly, packaging jobs and more; make a monetary gift to Goodwill or arrange for a planned gift through your estate.

How can I participate in Goodwill programs?

People who enroll in Goodwill programming must meet admission criteria.  For more information contact Vocational Rehabilitation Director Hilary Strauss at (440) 964-3565 or hstrauss@suite224.net.

How do I donate to Goodwill?

Each Goodwill store serves as a donation collection site.  For your convenience Goodwill also has numerous donation boxes in convenient locations, and operates periodic donation drives in conjunction with area businesses and schools.  For the most current information on locations, go to the donations page on this website.

Are my donations tax deductible?

Your donations to Goodwill may be deductible for income tax purposes.  For determination, contact your tax repairer or the IRS (www.irs.gov).  A donation valuation guide (for non-monetary donations) is available from Goodwill upon request.

What do you accept for donations?

We appreciate all new and gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, household items and furniture. Items must be in good condition and ready to place on the sales floor.

We also accept donations of items used in our stores and vocational training and employment center, such as store fixtures, computers, office equipment and more.

Due to environmental regulations and/or safety concerns, we are NOT ABLE TO ACCEPT the following items:  large appliances (unless prior approval is given), building supplies, broken or soiled furniture, automotive parts, batteries, chemicals, food, beverages, medicine or vitamins, ammunition, broken items and/or recalled items.  For recycling alternatives, please contact your local Waste Management Authority.

What happens to my donations?

Your donations stay in the community.  Once we receive your donations they are processed and sold in one of our retail stores.  The revenues from your purchases fund employment and job training programs to prepare people for job success here in our community.

Goodwill can also assist you if planned giving is of interest.  Please contact Nicole Steele at nicolesteele@suite224.net or call (440) 964-3565.

Are all those yellow donation boxes in the community yours?

No, Goodwill Industries has no yellow boxes in any community.

Every donator should make sure they know the charity they are donating to. Some collector’s donations do not stay in the community and as a result do not benefit the community.  Some collectors of donations, although have good causes, may go outside of the country.

There a four basic types of donated-goods collectors:

1.    Local, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations whose mission includes collecting goods and selling them to provide job training, housing, serving the needy and/or mission-related program funding. (Goodwill Industries)

2.    Local, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations whose volunteers collect and distribute or sell goods to fund special causes.

3.    Not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations that collect goods and sell them to for-profit retailers for cents on the dollar.

4.    For-profit organizations that collect and sell goods, with a connection (or implied connection) to not-for-profit organizations

Goodwill Industries boxes are white and are clearly marked with the blue & black Goodwill logo and black lettering.  All donations to Goodwill Industries stay in your community!!!

Who shops at Goodwill?

EVERYONE!!

What does Goodwill sell?

Goodwill sells gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, household items and furniture.  Each store also has a new goods section with a variety of new merchandise to choose from.

Why does Goodwill sell things?

To support our work of helping people with disabilities and other barriers reach their vocational potential.  Goodwill is also proud to be one of the areas largest and longest standing recyclers.  We have been recycling for over 100 years!

Salvage consists of unusable goods that can be recycled.  At this time we are recycling cardboard, plastic bags, metals, clothes, shoes, hats, belts, purses, books, cell phones and stuffed toys.  These items are sold to salvage dealers and shipped to recycle plants and to developing countries.  We also have a partnership with the Lake Erie Correctional Facility to recycle and refurbish small appliances and computers for area non profit organizations.  Through these recycling efforts Goodwill Industries of Ashtabula, Inc. earned a quarter of a million dollars last year alone.
